Flu Vaccines

It's time to start preparing for flu season by having your child vaccinated. If your child will have a checkup visit in September, October, or early November, you can have her vaccinated during that visit. Otherwise, please call the office to set up a quick "flu shot clinic" visit so you will be prepared. This year's vaccine covers both seasonal and H1N1 influenza and is available by injection (6 months and up) and nasal spray (2 years and up). Your insurance most likely covers the entire cost of the vaccine for your child. We can also administer flu vaccines for parents for a small fee.

Tennessee Immunization Update

The Tennessee Department of Health has made some changes to the immunization requirements for school aged children which may be affecting your child. For most of our patients, the main changes are:
  • Children entering kindergarten (Sr. K) this year will need a second Chicken Pox vaccine in addition to their other requirements (DTaP, MMR, Polio).
  • Children entering kindergarten next year (most current 4 year olds) will need the second Chicken Pox vaccine this year, and will also need two doses of Hepatitis A vaccine by next year. This may mean that you want to get the first dose of the Hepatitis A vaccine at the 4 year old checkup.
  • Children entering 7th grade this year will also need the second Checken Pox vaccine in additon to their other requirements (TdaP, Menningitis).
If your child is entering Kindergarten or 7th grade or starting a new school, you will need a new health form documenting these vaccines.

If you need to bring your child in for an update on any of these vaccines, please schedule early in the summer!

The Tennessee Department of Health published a letter to parents that you may review for more information.
