Helping Children Build Healthy Habits
A child’s weight, growth, nutrition, activity level, and overall health are important parts of pediatric care. Some children struggle with gaining too much weight. Others may have difficulty gaining enough. Many families simply want guidance about healthy eating, activity, sleep, and routines.
At Laurelwood Pediatrics, we can help families understand growth patterns, discuss healthy lifestyle habits, and create realistic plans that support long-term health.
Common Concerns
Weight and lifestyle concerns can look different for each child. Our goal is not to focus on appearance, but to support health, confidence, energy, and well-being.
Parents may have questions about:
- Rapid weight gain
- Difficulty gaining weight
- Picky eating or limited food choices
- Frequent snacking or sugary drinks
- Low activity level
- Screen time habits
- Sleep routines
- Family meals and portion sizes
- Cholesterol, blood sugar, or other health risks
- Healthy habits for the whole family
These conversations are most helpful when they are supportive, practical, and focused on small, lasting changes.
Evaluation and Guidance
During a visit, we will review your child’s growth pattern, nutrition, activity, sleep, family history, medications, and any related health concerns. We may also discuss school routines, sports, stress, screen use, and family habits.
Depending on your child’s age and situation, we may recommend changes to nutrition, activity goals, lab work, follow-up visits, or a referral to a specialist when needed.
Our goal is to help your child grow in a healthy way while avoiding shame, blame, or unrealistic expectations.
Building Healthy Habits
Healthy lifestyle changes usually work best when the whole family participates. Small steps can make a meaningful difference over time.
These may include drinking more water, limiting sugary drinks, eating more fruits and vegetables, improving sleep routines, planning regular meals, reducing mindless snacking, increasing daily movement, and setting healthy limits on screen time.
We can help your family choose goals that fit your child’s needs and your family’s daily life.
Ongoing Support
Weight management and healthy lifestyle changes take time. Children grow, schedules change, and families may need different support at different stages.
At Laurelwood Pediatrics, we can monitor growth, encourage progress, adjust goals, discuss lab results, and help families stay focused on health rather than numbers alone.

Immediate Care for Cuts and Minor Burns
Cuts and burns are common childhood injuries, and they often happen when families least expect them. Some wounds can be managed at home, but others require medical attention to clean the wound, close it, reduce the risk of infection, and promote healing.
At Laurelwood Pediatrics, we offer immediate care for many minor lacerations and burns. Depending on the injury, care may include wound cleaning, sutures, skin glue, dressings, burn care, pain guidance, and follow-up instructions.
When Your Child Has a Cut
Some cuts need more than a bandage. A laceration may need medical evaluation if it is deep, gaping, bleeding heavily, located on the face, caused by a bite, or difficult to clean.
During a visit, we can evaluate the wound, clean the area, and decide the best way to help it heal. Some cuts may be closed with sutures. Others may be treated with skin glue, wound strips, or a dressing.
If a cut is very deep, involves certain sensitive areas, or may need a specialist, we can help guide you to the right level of care.
When Your Child Has a Burn
Burns can happen from hot liquids, cooking surfaces, curling irons, sun exposure, or other accidents. We can provide initial care for many minor burns, including evaluation, cleaning, dressing, guidance on pain management, and home care instructions.
Burns that are large, deep, extensively blistering, located on sensitive areas, or caused by chemicals or electricity may require emergency care or specialist evaluation.
Follow-Up After Emergency or Urgent Care
Some children are first treated for cuts or burns in an emergency department or urgent care center. After that first visit, families often need help knowing whether the wound is healing well and what to do next.
At Laurelwood Pediatrics, we can help with:
- Rechecking wounds after initial treatment
- Monitoring for infection
- Changing or reviewing dressings
- Discussing wound care at home
- Removing stitches or staples when appropriate
- Reviewing tetanus vaccine status
- Helping decide whether additional care is needed
Follow-up visits can reassure families and help make sure healing stays on track.
We’re Here to Help
If your child has a cut, burn, or healing wound, you do not have to manage it alone.
The pediatricians at Laurelwood Pediatrics can help with immediate evaluation, sutures or skin glue when appropriate, initial burn care, follow-up after emergency or urgent care treatment, and referrals when needed.
