Breathing Support When Your Child Needs It
Coughing, wheezing, and trouble breathing can be scary for children and parents. Some children develop wheezing with colds, asthma flares, allergies, or other respiratory illnesses.
At Laurelwood Pediatrics, we can evaluate your child’s breathing and provide nebulizer treatments in the office when appropriate. These treatments may help open the airways, reduce wheezing, and help us decide what kind of ongoing care your child may need.
When Nebulizer Treatments May Help
Nebulizer treatments are sometimes used for children who are wheezing, coughing frequently, breathing harder than usual, or having asthma-like symptoms.
Parents may notice:
- Wheezing or noisy breathing
- Frequent coughing
- Cough that worsens at night
- Trouble catching their breath
- Breathing faster than usual
- Retractions or working harder to breathe
- Symptoms that worsen with colds, allergies, exercise, or weather changes
- A history of asthma or recurrent wheezing
If your child is struggling to breathe, breathing very fast, turning blue, unable to speak or drink, or seems very ill, seek urgent or emergency care right away.
In-Office Evaluation and Treatment
During a visit, we will listen to your child’s lungs, check their breathing effort, review symptoms, and discuss any history of wheezing, asthma, allergies, or respiratory illness.
If a nebulizer treatment is appropriate, we can often provide it in the office and then reassess your child’s breathing afterward. A child’s response to treatment can help us decide whether additional medication, closer follow-up, or a home treatment plan may be needed.
Home Nebulizer Use
Some children who respond well to nebulizer treatments in the office may benefit from having a nebulizer available at home.
When appropriate, we can help arrange for a home nebulizer and provide instructions for how and when to use it. We will also review medication directions, signs that treatment is helping, and symptoms that mean your child should be seen again or treated urgently.
Home nebulizer use should always follow your child’s specific treatment plan.
Ongoing Breathing Care
Some children only need breathing treatments during certain illnesses. Others may need ongoing asthma care, allergy management, or an asthma action plan.
At Laurelwood Pediatrics, we can help monitor symptoms, adjust medications, discuss triggers, create or update asthma action plans, and decide whether referral to a specialist is needed.
We’re Here to Help
If your child is coughing, wheezing, or having breathing symptoms, you do not have to manage it alone.
The pediatricians at Laurelwood Pediatrics can help with evaluation, in-office nebulizer treatments, home nebulizer guidance when appropriate, medication management, and ongoing respiratory care.
