FAQs

Laurelwood Pediatrics

  • Do you take my insurance?

Most likely. We accept the majority of commercial insurance plans, including most BCBS, Cigna, Aetna, United, and Tricare, as well as numerous other commercial carriers. If you have questions about your specific plan, please contact our office for verification.
We do not participate with TennCare. Tennessee state law prohibits us from treating children covered by TennCare, even if you choose to pay privately.
  • Does Laurelwood Pediatrics accept non-vaccinated patients?

The physicians at Laurelwood Pediatrics strongly support childhood vaccination and recommend that all patients receive complete immunizations according to the recommended schedule. As a result, we do not accept new patients whose parents decline vaccination.
  • Do you take xrays?

Xray services are not available at our office. While some imaging studies we order are straightforward, many require interpretation by a qualified pediatric radiologist. When your child needs an xray, we will provide a referral to a radiology facility that participates with your insurance plan. Most imaging can be completed quickly, and results are typically available promptly. More complex procedures may require advance scheduling, and our staff will help coordinate this process.
  • Can I see my own pediatrician when I come in to the office?

We recognize the importance of the relationship between a patient and their physician, and we make every effort to ensure your child sees their regular pediatrician whenever possible. For well-child visits, scheduling with your pediatrician is generally straightforward, though we recommend planning several months in advance to secure your preferred date and time. For sick visits, we typically can arrange an appointment with your pediatrician, but same-day appointments made later in the day may be scheduled with another physician on our team.
  • How long will I have to wait at the office when I come for an appointment?

We respect your time and work to minimize waiting periods. Average wait times range from 10 to 30 minutes. During this period, several important tasks are completed to support your child's care. Our staff verifies your insurance coverage to prevent billing complications, our medical assistant gathers relevant information about your visit, and age-appropriate screenings are initiated. Occasionally, urgent situations involving other patients may cause delays, and we appreciate your patience when these circumstances occur.
  • What is early morning clinic?

We offer a walk-in clinic for ill children from 8:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m., Monday through Friday. No appointment is required during these hours. On rare occasions when patient volume exceeds our capacity during this timeframe, some families may be offered appointments later in the day during check-in. For ongoing medical concerns, we recommend scheduling a regular appointment with your child's physician. If your child is ill and you prefer a same-day appointment outside of early morning clinic hours, please call to schedule.
  • Can I walk in without an appointment?

Walk-in visits are accommodated only during our early morning clinic hours from 8:00 to 8:30 a.m., Monday through Friday, without an additional fee. For all other times, please call to schedule an appointment.
  • What if my child is sick on his checkup day?

We prefer to schedule well-child examinations and illness visits separately when possible, though we understand this is not always feasible. If your child requires management of a medical concern during a scheduled checkup, your insurance carrier may bill for both services.
In many cases, we can proceed with a well-child examination even if your child has a minor illness. If your child appears too ill to receive scheduled immunizations, we can complete the examination and schedule a separate visit for vaccinations.
  • How do I contact you in case of emergency?

For after-hours or weekend concerns, call our regular office number at 901.683.9371. Our answering service will contact one of our nurses, who will return your call promptly.
  • Is telephone advice available and is there a charge for this service?

We understand that parents frequently have routine questions. A nurse is available during business hours to address these concerns. For non-urgent daytime questions, you may submit them through our patient portal and a nurse will respond. Nurses are also available for more urgent matters after hours. These services are provided at no charge.
Certain telephone consultations with your pediatrician qualify as billable medical encounters. Laurelwood will submit claims to your health plan for these specific types of calls. Your financial responsibility depends on your individual insurance coverage.
